Newcomer of the Year (Violin)

Ray Chen

The "Echo Klassik" as Young Artist of the Year (violin) goes to Ray Chen for his début CD "Virtuoso". The young violinist, who was born in Taiwan and grew up in Australia, found himself in the limelight after winning the 2008 Yehudi Menuhin Competition, and then in 2009 the Concours Reine Elisabeth in Brussels, two of the world's most important violin competitions. On "Virtuoso" he presents a selection of his favourite pieces, accompanied by the pianist Noreen Polera. The recital opens with Tartini's famous "Devil's Trill" sonata, followed by the Chaconne from Bach's Partita no. 2. Another of Chen's favourite composers is Wieniawski, who is represented here by his "Légende" in G minor, op. 17. Ray Chen ends his début album with César Franck's intimate and lyrical Violin Sonata in A major, which he recorded on the famous Huggins Stradivarius.
