Instrumentalist of the Year (Piano)

Murray Perahia

Pianist Murray Perahia has been awarded the "Echo Klassik" prize as Instrumentalist of the Year for his new Brahms album, on which he presents works from three periods of the composer's career. With the Handel Variations he build a perfect bridge between Bach and the music of the Romantic era. This early composition consists of a theme that is thoroughly Baroque in character and a set of deeply Romantic variations. Perahia discovers in the Handel Variations clear parallels to Bach's Goldberg Variations: these are both large-scale workts that testify to the enormous intellect of their composers. The CD also features piano works from Brahms's middle and late periods, in the shape of the two Rhapsodies, op. 79, and the introspective piano pieces op. 118 and 119.
