The SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart is considered one of the finest choirs in the world. Founded in 1946, the ensemble has dedicated itself to the promotion and performance of new and little-known choral music. This year's award marks the fifth time the ensemble, under the leadership of Marcus Creed, has been honored with the Ensemble of the Year award from ECHO Klassik. Earlier this year the SWR Vokalensemble received the distinguished Europäischen Chorpreis 2011 from the European Foundation for Culture, "Pro Europa."

As the "enfant terrible" of 20th century Brazilian music, the eccentric, self-taught Heitor Villa-Lobos, was one of the most prolific composers to have ever lived, and is considered one of the most representative Latin American musicians.
Drawing upon the indigenous music of Native Americans, African slaves and the popular music of his hometown, Rio de Janeiro, Villa-lobos successfully married the European tradition with the living folk music of Brazil. Villa-Lobos composed choral music throughout his life, however, this vast legacy remains largely unknown. SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart has assembled a beautiful and revelatory overview of Villa-Lobos' choral music, including numerous rarities and First Recordings!
