The John Wilson Orchestra
Conductor and arranger John Wilson formed the John Wilson Orchestra in 1994. Today the orchestra has an international reputation as a unique handpicked ensemble of some of the world’s finest musicians. The ensemble specialises in recording contemporary film sound tracks and authentic concert performances of classic film musical scores. Outside of the concert hall the orchestra has contributed to sound track recordings for films including ‘The Gathering Storm’ and in 2007 was nominated for a Grammy Award for ‘Best Soundtrack’ for ‘Beyond the Sea’ starring Kevin Spacey as Bobby Darrin.
The John Wilson Orchestra has recorded a range of critically acclaimed albums. Moreover, the ensemble was invited to perform a concert for HRH Prince of Wales American Foundation at Buckingham Palace.
In August 2009 the John Wilson Orchestra made its debut at the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in a concert celebrating the 75th anniversary of the MGM Film musicals. The concert was broadcast live on British television where it was watched by 3.5 million people and repeated three times. The ensemble has become a solid institution at the BBC Proms since then – in 2015 the orchestra will be performing a tribute to crooner Frank Sinatra starring Seth MacFarlane (the creator and principal vocalist behind the ever-popular animated series Family Guy) as well as a concert dedicated to Leonard Bernstein. The John Wilson Orchestra records exclusively for Warner Classics.
Shortlisted in 2007 for the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society’s Conductor’s Award, John Wilson has established an enviable reputation as a conductor, arranger and scholar, recognised internationally as an expert in the specialist fields of light music, jazz and music for screen.
Born in Gateshead on Tyneside in 1972, John Wilson studied composition and conducting at the Royal College of Music where his teachers were Joseph Horovitz and Neil Thomson. He graduated from the RCM in 1995 winning all the major conducting prizes and the coveted Tagore Gold Medal for the most outstanding student and has recently been made a Fellow.
